PA Turnpike To Start Tree Clearing Project Next Week

Tree removal will take place between mileposts 324-326 in Chester County.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists travelling eastbound and westbound on Interstate 76 (I-76) that they may experience nighttime single lane and shoulder closures due to a tree removal project that will begin next week and continue through March 2021 between mileposts 324 and 326.

Starting Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 at 6 p.m., contractors will begin removing trees eastbound on I-76 at milepost 324, Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. Crews will work during the nighttime hours clearing trees along the Turnpike’s Right-of-Way up to milepost 326.  Once eastbound is complete, crews will move to the westbound side, and clear trees from mileposts 326 to 324.

Most tree clearing work will be performed at night from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of March. During the tree clearing, the right lane and/or shoulder will be closed to allow the crews to safely remove the trees.

Digital message signs will provide information on the single lane closures. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly and to expect travel delays in this area.  Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

System-Wide Tree Clearing Program

The PA Turnpike has a system-wide program for tree removal and pruning within the Turnpike’s Right-of-Way.  The purpose of this program is to expose the Turnpike roadway to sunlight to help prevent icing of the road along with the de-icing materials our maintenance teams apply during the winter.  In addition, we are also removing unhealthy trees as well as those trees that have the potential to fall on the Turnpike roadway.  Trees that are removed under this program are deemed a safety issue/hazard and are cleared strictly within the Turnpike’s Right-of-Way.   No trees are ever removed outside of the Turnpike’s Right-of-Way.
