PA Turnpike is Reopened in Lehigh County

Northeastern Extension open to traffic between Lehigh Valley and Mahoning Valley exits.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has announced that the Northeastern Extension (I-476) has reopened, ahead of schedule, to traffic between the Lehigh Valley Interchange, Exit 56, and the Mahoning Valley Interchange, Exit 74, after a bridge replacement.

Crews worked very diligently over the last 50 hours to reopen the roadway approximately 30 minutes ahead of schedule.  Every construction task involved in the process was accomplished smoothly and ahead of time.

The Turnpike was closed for workers to replace the bridge that carries the Turnpike over State Route 309 at milepost A58.88 in South Whitehall Township starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.

The Turnpike used a proven engineering technique called Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) that allows workers to replace a bridge in one weekend rather than a year or more of construction.  This successful bridge replacement is the third ABC project for the Turnpike.
