PA Turnpike Closing Overnight June 9 Between New Stanton and Breezewood Interchanges
Seven-hour closure needed for bridge erection.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the PA Turnpike will be closed in both directions between the New Stanton, Exit #75, and Breezewood, Exit #161, interchanges starting at 11 p.m. on June 9 until approximately 6 a.m. on June 10, weather permitting.

This seven-hour closure is needed for crews to safely erect a temporary bridge to carry traffic on North Center Avenue (S.R. 601) over the Turnpike at milepost 110 in Somerset, Somerset County. The temporary bridge will be in place until a permanent, overhead bridge is built for North Center Avenue traffic.

Throughout the evening prior to the closure, announcements will be made inside the North Somerset and the North Midway service plazas to warn customers that they will not be permitted to continue driving after 11 p.m. on June 9.

Motorists at New Stanton and Breezewood interchanges will be given these recommended detours:

Eastbound traffic will be exiting the Turnpike at the New Stanton Interchange and be given this suggested detour:

U.S. 119 south (63 miles) to U.S. 40 east to I-68 east (at Cumberland, Maryland) (65 miles) to I-70 west (24 mile). Traffic will reenter the PA Turnpike at the Breezewood Interchange.

Westbound traffic will be exiting the Turnpike at the Breezewood Interchange and be given this suggested detour:

I-70 east (24 miles) to exit 1A (68/40 West, Cumberland, Maryland) (65.5 miles) to exit 14B (Uniontown) following U.S. 40 west to U.S. 119 north (63 miles) to exit 1B (PA Turnpike). Re-enter the PA Turnpike at the New Stanton Interchange. 

Such an extensive detour is recommended because shorter alternate routes cannot safely accommodate the diverted traffic volumes or the commercial traffic.

Note: Motorists will be permitted to enter the Turnpike going eastbound at the Bedford Interchange, Exit # 146, and motorists may enter the Turnpike going westbound at the Somerset Interchange, Exit #110 and also at the Donegal Interchange, Exit #91. 

During the closure, expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads. Message boards will be in place to inform customers of the closure.
