PA Turnpike Commission to Hold Community Meeting for Southern Beltway
Turnpike representatives will be available to provide overview of next construction section.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is moving ahead with the next phase of construction of the Southern Beltway’s (Toll 576) U.S. Route 22 to Interstate 79 (I-79) Project. An upcoming community meeting will detail the next section of work (55C1-2) taking place in Allegheny County, which extends about two miles from State Route 50 toward I-79 in South Fayette Township.

The community meeting will be held:

May 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

South Fayette (Cuddy) Township Volunteer Fire Department

661 Millers Run Road

South Fayette, PA 15031

PTC representatives and contracted specialists will be available to discuss future detours, blasting zones and additional construction-related information about the 55C1-2 section of the Southern Beltway.

The Trumbull Corporation in Pittsburgh was awarded the $37.7 million contract for this section. The work requires three million cubic yards of excavation and a nearly 300-foot long bridge to be built carrying traffic on Hickory Grade Road over the Southern Beltway. More details pertaining to the scope of work will be announced at the community meeting on May 2.

CDR Maguire Inc. of Pittsburgh will manage the construction of this entire project, which includes nine construction sections at a total estimated cost of $800 million. This project will require the management firm to provide cost, schedule and quality control while complying with all PTC, state and federal highway construction requirements.

The 13 miles of Southern Beltway currently being constructed will extend from the southern terminus of the existing, six-mile section called the Findlay Connector, which opened in 2006, to an interchange with I-79 near the Washington-Allegheny County line. The entire 19-mile Southern Beltway is expected to open to traffic in 2021 and will connect I-79 to I-376 at the Pittsburgh International Airport.
