PA Turnpike Commission to Hold Community Meeting for Southern Beltway
Turnpike representatives will be on-hand to provide overview of next project section.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is moving ahead with the next phase of construction of the Southern Beltway’s (Toll 576) U.S. Route 22 to Interstate 79 (I-79) Project by announcing another community meeting that will detail the next section of work taking place in Washington and Allegheny counties. This section (55C1-1) will extend approximately two miles from Cecil Reissing Road to State Route 50.

The community meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Sygan SNPJ Lodge #6 Hall in Bridgeville, Allegheny County.  PTC representatives and contracted project specialists will be available to discuss future detours, blasting zones and additional construction-related information about the 55C1-1 section of the Southern Beltway.

The Beaver Excavating Company in Canton, Ohio was awarded the $87.1 million contract for this section, which will require nearly four million cubic yards of excavation and include four bridges. Two bridges will span State Route 50, the Wheeling and Lake Erie Rail Line and Millers Run Creek Road, a third will connect Cecil Reissing Road to State Route 50 and a fourth bridge will act as an overpass for Cecil Sturgeon Road over Toll 576 as part of the new interchange that will connect with Reissing Road. The new interchange will be located approximately one mile west of State Route 50.

CDR Maguire Inc. of Pittsburgh will manage the construction of this entire project, which includes nine construction sections at a total estimated cost of $800 million. This project will require the management firm to provide cost, schedule and quality control while complying with all PTC, state and federal highway construction requirements.

The 13 miles of Southern Beltway currently being constructed will extend from the southern terminus of the existing, six-mile section called the Findlay Connector, which opened in 2006, to an interchange with I-79 near the Washington-Allegheny County line. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2020 and will extend the Southern Beltway to 19 total miles connecting I-79 to I-376 at the Pittsburgh International Airport.
