Long-Term, Single Lane Pattern on Northeastern Extension Begins March 14
Five-month restriction between milepost 101-104 needed for improvement project

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission cautions motorists that traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction on a three-mile stretch of the Northeastern Extension, Interstate 476, in Luzerne County for five months beginning March 14.

Motorists traveling northbound and southbound between the Pocono Interchange, Exit 95, and the Wilkes Barre Interchange, Exit 105, should expect delays and stoppages during the single lanes. Delays will intensify during holidays including Easter; Memorial Day; Independence Day; and during major regional events held at the Pocono Raceway from June through August.

Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Consider alternate routes during peak travel times.

The long-term, single-lane pattern is needed to complete the full-depth rehabilitation of the Northeastern Extension in this area. The rehabilitation project involves completely replacing the pavement — which first opened to traffic in 1955 — from the ground up.

For the first 10 days, traffic will be in a single-lane condition in both the northbound and southbound sides; by March 24, southbound traffic will be switched to the northbound side and the northbound lanes will carry bidirectional traffic. For the first three months, the contractor will rehabilitate the southbound lanes. In May, all traffic will be switched to the new southbound lanes so the contractor can work on the northbound side. The speed limit in the cattle chutes will be 55 miles an hour.

The contractor is working at an accelerated pace with two, 10 hour shifts seven days a week. This accelerated timeframe will cut the completion schedule construction timeframe in half.

Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.
