Traffic Restrictions Planned Between Somerset and Bedford Interchanges

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that bi-directional traffic paces between Somerset Interchange (Exit #110) and Bedford Interchange (Exit #146) will occur over the next six months beginning Sept. 14. The 20-minute traffic paces will start eastbound at the Allegheny Tunnel (MP 122) and westbound at milepost 135 at approximately noon each day Monday through Thursday, the Friday paces will take place at 9:45 a.m. During the 20-minute paces, a state police vehicle will restrict eastbound and westbound Turnpike traffic to a speed of 20-25 miles an hour allowing the contractor a window of time to blast the rock slope as part of the work being conducted for the New Baltimore Slope Remediation project. The roadway will be inspected after each blast to confirm safe conditions before traffic is released. Motorists in the area should be prepared for slow-moving traffic and possible intermittent stoppages. The Turnpike conducts pacing maneuvers in certain construction situations as an alternative to full roadway closures and detours. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions and other circumstances. This blasting work is part of the total reconstruction project between mileposts 124 and 134, which includes the New Baltimore Slope Remediation project (milepost 127.9 to milepost 128.7) in Allegheny Township, Somerset County which will also be completed prior to the reconstruction of the adjacent Turnpike mainline.
