Pa. Turnpike Closing Overnight Between Breezewood and Carlisle Interchanges
Six-hour closure needed for bridge work in Cumberland County Aug. 15.

The Pa. Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the toll road will be closed in both directions between the Breezewood Interchange (Exit #161) and the Carlisle Interchange (Exit #226) starting at 11 p.m. Aug. 15 until 5 a.m. on Aug. 16.

This 65-mile stretch will be closed for approximately six hours to place bridge beams at Meadowbrook Road Bridge at milepost 220 in Cumberland County. The closure is needed for the safety of the workers and motorists while the work is being performed. The work schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions and other circumstances.

The recommended detour for westbound motorists; exit at Carlisle (#266), take State Route 11 north to I-81 south (58 miles) to Maryland to I-70 west (I-81, Exit MD #4), (48 miles) to State Route 30 east and reenter at Breezewood Interchange (#161).

The recommended detour for eastbound motorists; exit at Breezewood (#161), take State Route 30 west (.3 miles) to I-70 east (I-70 exit MD #26), (48 miles) to I-81 north (58 miles) to State Route 11 south to reenter at Carlisle Interchange (#226).

It is estimated the detour will add about an hour of travel time and about 41 additional miles to the trip.  Such an extensive detour is required because shorter alternate routes cannot safely accommodate the diverted traffic volumes.

Alternate-route cards will be available to exiting travelers at Breezewood during the closure. Expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads during the closure. Message boards will be placed to inform customers of the closure, and Highway Advisory Radio broadcasts at station 1640 AM also are being used to inform travelers.

Turnpike motorists can get up-to-date travel conditions by calling 866-976-TRIP (8747). This toll-free number gives audio advisories for the region in which you are traveling, including delays and closures. Turnpike’s smartphone app, “TRIP Talk,” streams audio advisories to iPhone and Droid users. To download the free app, visit www.paturnpike.com/triptalk.
