Pennsylvania Turnpike to Close May 31 Between Butler Valley and Allegheny Valley Exits

Five and half-hour, overnight closure necessary for overhead bridge beam removal.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) alerts motorists that the Turnpike (I-76) will be closed in both directions between the Butler Valley Interchange (Exit #39) and Allegheny Valley Interchange (Exit #48) between midnight and 5:30 a.m., May 31. Drivers exiting at these interchanges should use the following approved detours:

EASTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Butler Valley Interchange

Follow State Route 8 north (1.7 miles)

Right on to State Route 910 east (10 miles)
Left onto Freeport Road (0.7 miles) to Allegheny Valley Interchange

WESTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Allegheny Valley Interchange

Follow Freeport Road south (0.7 miles)
Right to State Route 910 west (10 miles)
Take ramp to State Route 8 south (1.7 miles) to Butler Valley Interchange

Alternate-route cards will be available to exiting travelers at the Butler Valley and Allegheny Valley interchanges during the closure. Expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads during this time. Message boards will be in place to inform customers of the closure and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) broadcasts on station 1640 AM also are being used to inform travelers.

The closure is needed while crews from the general contractor, Trumbull Corporation, complete the bridge beam removal of the existing bridge that carried Saxonburg Blvd. (S.R. 1013) over the Turnpike at milepost 43.13. The new bridge is scheduled to reopen in late fall of 2015.

Bridge replacements are early-action projects needed to accommodate the total reconstruction of the Turnpike from milepost 40 to 48. Four bridges (Middle Road, two Gibsonia Road bridges and Rich Hill Road) have been replaced and opened to traffic since work began in early 2013. Over the next three years, one additional bridge in the area will be replaced while the mainline is reconstructed and widened between the Butler Valley and Allegheny Valley interchanges.  For more information on this project please visit http://www.mp40-48construction.com.
