Safety Patrols Help Keep Traffic Moving and Save Lives

‘Tis the season when heavy traffic and the distraction of the holidays, coupled with inclement weather hazards, increase risk for traffic crashes.  The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) and State Farm advise drivers to plan accordingly.

The State Farm Safety Patrol will be out on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to provide free, limited roadside assistance to drivers in need. They also assist in requesting the services of other first responders, clearing debris from the roadway and monitoring traffic congestion. Together PTC and State Farm are encouraging motorists to do their part in keeping safe during holiday travel by preparing for traffic delays, avoiding distractions, and driving safely to and from their holiday destinations. 

“The Safety Patrol will be out in full force to support the many travelers utilizing Pennsylvania’s Turnpike this holiday season,” said William Capone, Chief of Communications and Public Relations. “The Patrols not only assist in keeping the roadway clear and free of congestion, but also provide assistance to motorists who experience automotive problems. Their service is one that we believe many motorists and families will be thankful for this holiday season.”

There’s little doubt the State Farm Safety Patrols will be kept especially busy providing free assistance to disabled motorists on the Turnpike. Last year the patrol responded to more than 3,000 incidents in the month of December. 

“From distracted drivers to aggressive drivers, State Farm knows there are many risks facing motorists during the high-traffic holiday period,” said State Farm Public Affairs Manager Jen Alvarez. “During the holiday season and every day, the Safety Patrol Program demonstrates our good neighbor commitment to help people manage the risks of everyday life and recover from the unexpected." 

The State Farm Safety Patrol consists of 33 vehicles covering 554 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, assisting motorists 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Among the services the patrol may provide to help keep drivers safe: responding to incidents, providing traffic control for scene stabilization, and rendering customer assistance. State Farm signed on as the official program sponsor in 2007 and is a proud supporter of similar programs in nine additional states.
