Heavy Traffic Expected on Interstate 476 at Mid-County Oct. 17-21

Southbound Express E-ZPass lanes to close for toll-equipment upgrades.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises southbound motorists on the Northeastern Extension (Interstate 476) and motorists exiting the Turnpike westbound to be prepared for slow-moving or stopped traffic approaching the Mid-County Interchange (Exit #20) Oct. 17 through Oct. 21.

At 10 a.m. on Oct. 17 the Turnpike will close the southbound Express E-ZPass lanes diverting traffic through conventional (5 mph) E-ZPass lanes and mixed-mode lanes (E-ZPass & cash) to the right. This work is in preparation for the weekend-long closure. The southbound Express E-ZPass lanes will be reopened to traffic by 1 p.m.

On Oct. 18 at 10 p.m., southbound Express E-ZPass traffic will again be diverted through conventional lanes until the Express E-ZPass lanes are reopened by 5 a.m. on Oct. 21. The closure will allow the Turnpike to replace the Vehicle Smart Loop equipment located underneath the pavement in the Express E-ZPass lanes.

Motorists entering the Turnpike at Mid-County northbound from the Blue Route (I-476) will still have access to the Express E-ZPass lanes.

Eagles fans should allow extra time traveling to Sunday’s 1 p.m. home game or seek an alternate route.

If the Turnpike's Highway Advisory Radio is activated, as indicated by yellow flashing lights, please tune to Radio 1640 AM for updates. For emergencies, please dial *11.

Weather could delay or cancel the closure. Travelers can get Turnpike traffic alerts by calling 866-976-TRIP (8747) or visiting the live Travel Conditions Map online at www.paturnpike.com/webmap. The Turnpike’s smartphone app, TRIP Talk, streams audio advisories to iPhone and Droid users so they can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
