Traffic Shift for Widening Project to Close Northeastern Extension Oct. 6

Northbound I-476 will be shut down for six hours between Mid-County and Lansdale.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission cautions motorists that an 11-mile stretch of the Northeastern Extension (I-476) will be closed northbound only for six hours on Oct. 6 between Mid-County (Exit #20) and Lansdale (Exit #31). The closure is necessary to safely move existing northbound travel lanes to a new temporary configuration between milepost A20 to A26 as part of the total reconstruction and six-lane widening project.

At 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 6, northbound access to the Northeastern Extension from Mid County will be prohibited. Motorists wishing to travel north from the Mid-County Interchange or the east-west Turnpike mainline will be directed to exit I-276 at the Fort Washington Interchange (Exit #339) to return to I-476 at Lansdale. By 6 a.m. the Northeastern Extension will reopen with northbound traffic shifted to the new right lane and shoulder.

Recommended Detour:

• Traveling northbound on I-476 (Blue Route) from I-76 and I-95 – All traffic will enter the Turnpike at the Mid-County Toll Plaza (*NB Express E-ZPass lanes will be closed) and continue eastbound on I-276 to the Fort Washington Interchange. Exit the Turnpike and travel north on Route 309. Turn left on Welsh Road (State Route 63 west) and follow the signs to reenter I-476 at the Lansdale Interchange.

• Traveling east or west on I-276 to go north on the Northeastern Extension - All traffic will exit the Turnpike at the Fort Washington Interchange and travel north on Route 309. Turn left on Welsh Road (State Route 63 west) and follow the signs to reenter I-476 at the Lansdale Interchange.

There will be no impact for motorists traveling southbound on I-476.

Prior to the shut-down, on Oct. 5 at 11 p.m., the contractor will close the northbound right lane.  Additionally, some emergency pull offs will be closed.

In preparation for the traffic shift, motorists should watch for intermittent nighttime traffic restrictions with reduced work-zone speeds between milepost A20-A26. Construction-zone speed limits are enforceable and fines will be increased.

Message boards are activated to alert motorists of the traffic shift and updates to the contractor’s schedule. Call boxes have been removed or deactivated within the work zone, for emergencies, dial *11 on your mobile phone.

*Oct. 4 at 10 p.m., a pattern will be set on the Blue Route (north of Exit 19) diverting northbound Express E-ZPass traffic through conventional lanes until 5 a.m. Oct. 7.
The closure will allow the Turnpike to replace the Vehicle Smart Loop equipment located underneath the pavement in the Express E-ZPass lanes.
