Pa. Turnpike Temporarily Closes Peter J. Camiel Service Plaza

Plaza was closed earlier today, but it is unknown when it will reopen.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has temporarily closed its Peter J. Camiel Service Plaza — located in Chester County at milepost 305 for westbound traffic — due to what appears to be a form of mold detected this morning after leaks in the roof were discovered.

The decision was made to shut down the plaza in the interest of public and employee safety until the substance can be confirmed and properly removed if needed. It is unknown how long the plaza may need to be closed.

Even though food is unavailable at the restaurants, Sunoco remains open and continues to dispense fuel; drinks, snacks and other items are also available at the Sunoco convenience store, which is located in a separate building. Alternate arrangements have been made for restroom facilities; temporary portable restrooms will be on site later today.

The PTC expects to know precisely when the plaza will reopen in the next few days. In the meantime, travelers can use the next on-pike facility, the Lawn Service Plaza at milepost 259, which about 46 miles west. Turnpike travelers can also seek off-Turnpike facilities at the Morgantown Interchange (Exit#298), which is just seven miles past the Camiel Plaza.

The Camiel Plaza was scheduled for reconstruction beginning in October. The plaza was to remain open during the remodeling, but it’s is unknown if that schedule will be impacted by this morning’s discovery.

Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead before traveling by calling the Turnpike Roadway Information line, 866-976-TRIP (8747) for real-time traffic alerts or visiting the Turnpike's live Travel Conditions Map online at www.paturnpike.com.
