Hickory Road at Turnpike Bridge in Plymouth Township to Close Monday

Detour in effect 7 a.m. July 16 for two weeks near the Plymouth Meeting Mall.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that Hickory Road will be closed to traffic and a detour implemented between Germantown Pike and Narcissa Road in Plymouth Meeting starting at 7 a.m. Monday, July 16 and will remain in effect until Sunday, July 29.  Hickory Road, adjacent to the Plymouth Meeting Mall, will be closed to traffic for two weeks while Walsh Construction begins construction on the new bridge abutments.

The work requires the use of large cranes which were to be located on the Turnpike mainline (I-476) in close proximity to overhead power lines. After carefully considering the safety of the workers, the closure will allow the contractor to complete the work from Hickory Road. Local access on Hickory Road will be available to Fountain Road from the west and to Jocelyn Road from the east; however, there will not be any vehicle or pedestrian traffic allowed through the construction zone.

Signs will be posted to alert motorists of the closure. The detour route will be marked as follows: Motorists on Germantown Pike will take Walton Road to Township Line Road, turn right and follow to Narcissa Road. The detour ends at Hickory Road. The contractor anticipates lifting the detour the weekend of July 21-22 to facilitate mall traffic and access to the Plymouth Meeting Mall and the Doubletree Guest Suites from Hickory Road will not be affected.

The work is part of the Turnpike’s total reconstruction and widening project now underway on the Northeastern Extension (I-476) between the Mid-County Interchange and Berks Road (milepost A26). The construction at the Hickory Road underpass should not impact traffic on the Turnpike mainline.
