Overnight Closure Scheduled on Pa. Turnpike between Irwin and Pittsburgh June 16-17

Five-hour closure is necessary to accommodate overhead bridge work at milepost 63.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike mainline will be closed in both directions between the Irwin Exit (#67) and the Pittsburgh Exit (#57) starting at 11:59 p.m. on June 16 through 5 a.m. on June 17, weather permitting. The closure is needed to accommodate work on the bridge that carries State Route 130 over the Turnpike (Interstate 76) in Westmoreland County near the Harrison City Maintenance facility.

The recommended detour for westbound traffic exiting at Irwin (#67) is: U.S. Route 30 east (4.6 miles) to Turnpike 66 north (7 miles) to U.S. Route 22 west (10.5 miles). Reenter the Turnpike at the Pittsburgh Interchange (#57) and follow signs to Ohio and west.

The recommended detour for eastbound traffic exiting at Pittsburgh (#57) is: U.S. Route 22 east (10.5 miles) to Turnpike 66 south (7 miles) to U.S. Route 30 west (4.6 miles). Reenter the Turnpike at the Irwin Interchange and follow signs for Harrisburg and east.

Alternate-route cards will be available to exiting travelers at the Irwin and Pittsburgh interchanges during the closure. Expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads during the closure. Message boards will be placed to inform customers of the closure, and Highway Advisory Radio broadcasts at station 1640 AM also are being used to inform travelers.

Local traffic using State Route 130 in Penn Township between midnight and 5 a.m. will encounter several short-term stoppages between Nike Site Road and Pleasant Valley Road. The mainline closure and State Route 130 stoppages are needed for beam erection for the western half of the overhead bridge which carries State Route 130 over the Turnpike.

This bridge-replacement project began in March and is to be done by November. Plum Contracting Inc. is replacing the existing bridge in two stages to minimize delays to local traffic. The bridge will be replaced with a single-span, steel girder bridge. The project includes signal upgrades at the Pleasant Valley Road/Route 130 intersection and widening of Route 130 between Pleasant Valley Road and Nike Site Road.

Turnpike customers can get real-time travel information by calling 866.976.TRIP (or 866.976.8747). This toll-free number gives audio advisories for the region in which you are traveling, including delays and closures due to accidents or weather. To check conditions before you hit the road, the Turnpike's Interactive Travel Map at www.paturnpike.com/webmap delivers a snapshot of conditions across the Turnpike, including web cams, at-a-glance traffic-flow status, weather conditions, audio advisories and more.

The Turnpike’s smartphone app, TRIP Talk, streams audio advisories to iPhone and Droid users on America's First Superhighway. To download the free app, visit http://www.paturnpike.com/triptalk. Users do not have to create an account, register or sign up with the Turnpike to use TRIP Talk. The app uses your phone's built-in GPS to stream nearby advisories.
