| The Pennsylvania Turnpike advises motorists that pre-construction related activities will begin next week for the replacement of the overhead bridge on the Pa. Turnpike’s Northeastern Extension (I-476) at the Wyoming Valley Interchange, Exit #115 in Pittston Township, Luzerne County. Starting Monday, March 5 (weather permitting), the contractor will begin installing advance warning signs and traffic control devices on the Turnpike mainline and the ramp-bridge that carries interchange traffic to Rt. 315. The overhead structure located on the Turnpike mainline at milepost A114.64 will be replaced in stages to maintain traffic to and from the Turnpike during construction. HRI, Inc. of State College, Pa., was awarded the $5.4 million contract to replace the 55 year-old ramp-bridge on Dec. 6, 2011. The contract requires lane closures on the ramp bridge while crews remove double sided guiderail in the median, install temporary concrete barrier, widen and pave the existing shoulder and restripe the bridge in preparation to shift traffic into one lane. A signal will be installed at both ends of the approach to control traffic movement. Work also includes the installation of erosion and sedimentation controls, reconstruction of the ramp approaches, mainline shoulders and median, and the construction of a retaining wall. All work is weather permitting and contractor schedules subject to change. The expected date of completion for the replacement bridge is fall 2012. If work on the Turnpike mainline requires the contractor to restrict traffic to a single lane, the posted speed limit will be 40 mph. Construction-zone speed limits are enforceable, and fines will be doubled. The Pennsylvania Turnpike urges motorists traveling northbound on the Northeastern Extension (I-476) in the vicinity of the Wyoming Valley Interchange to be prepared for single-lane traffic restrictions, slow moving or stopped traffic and posted speed limits of 55/40 mph. In the event of emergency-lane closures, the Turnpike will activate its Variable Message Signs and Highway Advisory Radio System (1640 AM) to inform motorists of conditions.
