Placement of Bridge Beams for New Bridge to Close PA Northeastern Extension for Six Hours Early Sunday

Mid-County to Lansdale to Shutdown from Midnight until 6 a.m. Sunday
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (10/01/2009)(readMedia)-- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission cautions motorists that an 11-mile stretch of the toll road will be closed in both directions for six hours this weekend between Mid-county (Exit #20) and Lansdale (Exit #31) to allow a contractor to place beams for the new bridge carrying Walton Road (SR 3012) over the Turnpike in Plymouth Township, Montgomery County.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, October 4 all southbound traffic will be diverted off at the Lansdale Interchange and motorists intending to travel north from I-276 will exit at the Fort Washington Interchange to re-enter I-476 at Lansdale. The Turnpike will re-open by 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

Preparations for the closure will begin Saturday, October 3 at 10 a.m. when local traffic will be restricted to one-lane on Walton Road and at 11 p.m. on I-476 south of Lansdale Interchange. Motorists should expect stopped and slow moving traffic when approaching the construction area until traffic is fully restored at 6 a.m.

Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the Lansdale, Mid-County, and Norristown Interchanges with information to assist motorists. The Turnpike Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) will be activated and motorists can tune to 1640 AM for detour information and traffic conditions. Changeable message signs are currently in place to provide the traveling public with updated information regarding closures and detours. Motorists are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly. MOTORISTS CAN TAKE THE FOLLOWING DETOURS:

Traveling southbound on I-476 Northeast Extension intending to

Go east or west on I-276 East-West Turnpike

Exit at Lansdale interchange. After the toll booths turn left onto Sumneytown Pike. Follow signs for Route 63 east until you reach Route 309. Take Route 309 South to the Fort Washington Turnpike interchange

Continue south on I-476

Exit at Lansdale interchange. After the toll booths turn left onto Sumneytown Pike. Follow signs for Route 63 east until you reach Route 309. Take Route 309 South to the Fort Washington Turnpike interchange. Take the Turnpike west and exit at the Mid-County interchange to I-476 south

Traveling northbound on I-476 intending to continue on the Northeast Extension

Take the ramp for I-276 East and head east on the Turnpike. Exit at the Fort Washington (339) Interchange and head north on Route 309. Turn left on Route 63 and follow Route 63 west to the Turnpike's Lansdale Interchange

Traveling either direction on I-276 intending to head north on the Northeast Extension

Exit at the Fort Washington (339) Interchange and head north on Route 309. Turn left on Route 63 and follow Route 63 west to the Turnpike's Lansdale Interchange

*In the case of high winds and lightening the closure will be rescheduled for October 18.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urges the motoring public to stay alert and to travel at posted speed limits through all highway work zone areas. Speed limits will be enforced and fines increased.
