Car-Show Traffic May Cause Delays at PA Turnpike's Carlisle Exit

Show guests strongly urged to use alternate routes due to interchange construction.
HARRISBURG, PA (08/26/2009)(readMedia)-- Pennsylvania Turnpike officials anticipate heavy traffic this weekend in Cumberland County as thousands of car enthusiasts converge on the Carlisle Fairgrounds for the Corvettes at Carlisle event, Aug. 28-30. Turnpike travelers should plan for delays and possible slow-moving or stopped traffic on the mainline, especially at and around the Carlisle Exit (#226), which is now being renovated.

The car show attracts up to 120,000 weekend visitors, creating traffic conditions similar to a major sporting event or concert. The heaviest volumes of exiting traffic at Carlisle are likely to be Saturday between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and again between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Traffic getting on the Turnpike at Carlisle is expected to be heaviest Saturday after 7:30 p.m.

Construction activity for the improvement project now under way at the Carlisle Interchange will be suspended, but entering and exiting motorists will encounter new traffic patterns in the toll-plaza area. These changes do limit vehicle-stacking capacity in the toll plaza, meaning exiting vehicles will backup more quickly onto the mainline Turnpike in particular into the westbound Turnpike travel lane.

To avoid overloading the Carlisle Exit, motorists bound for Corvettes at Carlisle are strongly urged to use one of the below-listed alternative Turnpike exits:

Harrisburg East Exit #247 - Exit onto I-283 North and go to I-83 North to I-81 South to Exit #49/Route 641/High St. Follow High St. to North East St. and turn right (traffic light). Keep straight, and at second light you will cross over Route 11. Go approximately two blocks, and the fairgrounds will be on the right.

Harrisburg West Exit #242
- Exit onto I-83 North to Route 581 West to I-81 South to Exit #49/Route 641/High St. Follow High St. to North East St. and turn right (traffic light). Keep straight, and at second light you will cross over Route 11. Go approximately two blocks, and the fairgrounds will be on the right.

Gettysburg Pike Exit #236 Alternate #1 - Exit onto Route 15 South to Dillsburg. Turn right onto Route 74 North to Carlisle. Stay on Route 74 North towards center of town. Turn right onto North East St. (traffic light). Keep straight, and at second light you will cross over Route 11. Go approximately two blocks, and the fairgrounds will be on the right.

Gettysburg Pike Exit #236 Alternate #2
- Exit onto Route 15 North to Route 581 West (note: construction in this area) to Interstate 81 South to Exit #49/Route 641/High St. Follow High St. to North East St. and turn right (traffic light). Keep straight, and at second light you will cross over Route 11. Go approximately two blocks, and the fairgrounds will be on the right.

Turnpike traffic conditions could be exacerbated by three other weekend events in Central Pennsylvania:

* the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Manheim, Pa., near the Turnpike's Lebanon/Lancaster Exit (#266);

* a Rascal Flatts concert Aug. 29 at Hersheypark Stadium, Hershey, Pa. likely to effect exiting traffic at Harrisburg East and Lebanon/Lancaster; and

* sprint-car racing at Williams Grove Speedway, Mechanicsburg, Pa. likely impacting the Turnpike's Gettysburg Pike Exit.

The Turnpike will have increased staffing at the effected interchanges as well as boosted maintenance and safety patrols. To avoid delays, plan ahead before you leave by calling the Turnpike Roadway Information line, 866-976-TRIP (8747) to hear real-time Turnpike traffic alerts. Or, refer to the Turnpike's Travel Conditions Map online at www.paturnpike.com.
