Bridge Replacement Traffic Restrictions Begin

(Harrisburg) The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission today announced that effective Monday, February 4 through September, there will be both northbound and southbound shoulder closures on the Northeastern Extension between the Mid-County Interchange (Exit 21) and the Lansdale Interchange (Exit 31) to accommodate replacement of the Kriebel Road bridge (1 ½ miles south of the Lansdale Interchange) in Towamencin Township, and the Bethel Road bridge (4 ½ miles south of the Lansdale Interchange) in Worcester Township that cross over the Turnpike. In addition, nighttime single-lane closures will be implemented as needed.

Detours are already in effect redirecting Kriebel Road bridge traffic over State Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike/County Road), Kriebel Road, and Bustard Road. Bethel Road bridge traffic is being redirected over State Route 2001/Morris Road, State Route 202, State Route 73. Both bridge replacement projects are scheduled for completion by year-end.

There will also be occasions when the 10.5-mile section of the Northeast Extension (I-476) from the Mid-County Interchange to the Lansdale Interchange will be closed in both northbound and southbound directions with off-Pike detours in effect. The first closure between the Mid-County and Lansdale Interchanges is scheduled to occur on Sunday, February 24 (weather permitting) between midnight and 6 a.m. Changeable message signs will be situated along the mainline to provide the traveling public with updated information regarding closures and detours.

Questions and/or concerns regarding the Kreibel Road or Bethel Road bridge replacement projects can be directed to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s construction project hotline at 1-877-855-2545 on a 24-hour basis, Sunday through Saturday.

The Kriebel Road Bridge (Township Road 395 and the Bethel Road Bridge (State Route 3006) are two of seven bridges targeted for replacement as part of the ongoing Northeastern Extension total reconstruction and widening project in Montgomery County.
