TRAFFIC ADVISORY

TURNPIKE TO CLOSE MIDNIGHT SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY MORNING BETWEEN IRWIN AND NEW STANTON FOR BRIDGE DEMOLITION

An eight-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) in Westmoreland County will be closed for about 4.5 hours starting at midnight Saturday for blasting to demolish an overhead bridge at Milepost 72.5 that is to be replaced.

Eastbound traffic on the Turnpike will be forced to exit at Irwin (Exit #67) and will be detoured around the bridge site via U.S. Route 30 East and the Amos K. Hutchinson Greensburg Bypass (Toll 66 South). Detoured eastbound traffic will re-enter I-76 East at New Stanton.

Westbound traffic on the Turnpike will be forced to exit at New Stanton (Exit #75) and will be detoured around the blasting via Toll 66 North and U.S. Route 30 West. Detoured westbound traffic will re-enter I-76 West at Irwin.

Traffic on Arona Road, which runs parallel to the Turnpike on the north side of I-76, will be stopped during the blast. The stoppage of traffic on Arona Road should not exceed 15 minutes in duration.

The rigid-frame concrete arch bridge being replaced at Milepost 72.5 carries Madison Road ( State Route 3016) over the Turnpike in Hempfield Township. Madison Road has been closed at its Turnpike crossing since March 28. The new concrete box beam bridge that will carry Madison Road is expected to be ready for traffic by December 2006.
