FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRAVEL ADVISORY: MID-COUNTY INTERCHANGE

Motorists Should Expect Changing Traffic Patterns, Possible Delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA. (June 16, 2005) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike is advising motorists of changing traffic patterns and modified lane configurations at the Mid-County Interchange (Exit #20) while construction crews install four new “Express E-ZPass” lanes now through the end of September.

When completed, E-ZPass customers will be able to travel at highway speed through one of four designated lanes (two entry and two exit lanes) as their toll is paid electronically. (E-ZPass motorists at Mid-County must now slow to 5 mph.) The new speed limit in the Express E-ZPass lanes — that will be physically separated from the other lanes by a concrete median barrier — will be 55 mph for southbound motorists and 35 mph for those who are northbound through Mid-County.

As demolition and construction continue, Turnpike customers should expect occasional delays, especially during morning and evening rush hours.

Work is being done in the middle lanes, which includes northbound lanes #5 and #6 and southbound lanes #7 and #8. All other entry and exit lanes, including regular E-ZPass and ticket lanes, will remain open throughout construction.

Southbound cash-paying customers should use lanes #13 through #17 at the far right of the toll plaza. E-ZPass customers should use lanes #9 through #12 on the left side of the toll plaza. When approaching the toll plaza in the northbound direction, cars should stay to the right and trucks to the left.

Travelers can call the Turnpike’s toll-free customer assistance line at 1-800-331-3414 for traffic conditions at Mid-County. Also, motorists can browse the Turnpike web page at www.paturnpike.com for pertinent information on construction, or tune the car radio to 1640AM when approaching Mid-County for updates.

Mid-County is just the second Pennsylvania toll plaza to feature the customer-friendly express lanes. The Warrendale Mainline Toll Plaza (#30) in western Pennsylvania was the state’s first location for Express E-ZPass in June 2004.

MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO SLOW DOWN AND USE CAUTION WHEN APPROACHING CONSTRUCTION AREAS – INCREASED PENALTIES CAN APPLY.
