TRAFFIC ADVISORY

FRANKLIN ROAD BRIDGE OVER TURNPIKE NEAR PINE-MARSHALL LINE WILL CLOSE SEPTEMBER 7 FOR REPLACEMENT PROJECT

The bridge carrying Franklin Road (State Route 4061) over Interstate 76 in Pine Township, Allegheny County will close as of daybreak Tuesday, September 7, and remain closed until Summer 2005 for a replacement project.

A 6.9-mile detour around the work site, just north of Franklin Road’s junction with Warrendale-Bakerstown Road (SR 4052), will be posted.

The $4.1 million project involving removal and replacement of the existing span with a concrete box-beam structure is contracted to Swank Associated Companies, Inc. of New Kensington.

Related work will include construction of new approaches north and south of the Turnpike crossing, drainage improvements, a realignment of Rich Hill Lane immediately north of the crossing and some construction on the Turnpike mainline under the crossing.

Deadline for completion of the job is June 24, 2005.

Franklin Road is a popular north-south alternative to U.S. Route 19 in the Pine-Marshall-Cranberry area and carries an average of 7,800 vehicles per day.

It crosses over the Turnpike at Milepost 31.2, just east of the Warrendale mainline toll plaza that opened on June 1, 2003, as the new western terminus of the Turnpike’s ticket-toll system. The commission’s first highway-speed electronic fare collection lanes opened there in June of this year.

Replacement of the Franklin Road Bridge will widen the eastbound merge area and, even more so, the approach area where westbound motorists begin to fan out into the E-ZPass Express lane or the other traditional fare collection lanes at Warrendale.
