Motorists on the Pa. Route 60 Expressway in the area of Pittsburgh International Airport will encounter single-lane traffic patterns starting Monday, April 5 so that crews can widen the inside berms of the highway in preparation for the construction of tie-ins with the Findlay Connector.
Replacement of the existing four-feet-wide shoulders with six-feet-wide shoulders is not expected to inconvenience northbound traffic headed for the airport. Traffic exiting the airport to Route 60 South may encounter minor delays on Route 60 during a period of approximately three weeks, starting Monday, April 12.
The inside shoulders of the Route 60 Expressway that will be expanded into the current 60-foot median will later serve as temporary travel lanes when other phases of construction begin. The work zone is between the Flaugherty Run Road and McClaren Road interchanges on Route 60. Widening of the inside shoulder on Route 60 South will begin first, on Monday, April 5, and will last approximately three weeks.
Widening of the inside shoulder on Route 60 North will begin Monday, April 12, and also will last approximately three weeks. Northbound traffic on Route 60 will not encounter a single-lane pattern until after it passes the access ramp into Pittsburgh International Airport. Southbound traffic on Route 60 will encounter restrictions before airport access points and could use Business Route 60 as an alternate.
No detour will be posted for either direction. The shoulder widening is part of Findlay Connector Construction Section 54A, which is contracted to Dick Corporation. The Findlay Connector, a six-mile tolled expressway extending south from the airport to U.S. Route 22 in Robinson Township, Washington County, is expected to open in Summer 2006.
