Westbound Pennsylvania Turnpike Will Temporarily Close at Carlisle Starting Early This Sunday Morning The four-hour closure is needed to allow crews to recover a wrecked trailer. |
||
All westbound traffic will be diverted off the Turnpike at Carlisle, where drivers will receive printed directions to get back onto the Turnpike at the Breezewood Interchange (#161). The detour from Carlisle is: I-81 South into northern Maryland (58 miles), then to I-70 West back into Pennsylvania (48 miles), to R r oute 30 East, reentering the Turnpike at Breezewood. This alternate route, though long, was selected because it offers four-lane highway and better access to services (gas, food, etc.) for most of the route, avoiding mountainous, winding detours that could pose a wintertime driving hazard. Motorists exiting at Carlisle who had intended to use the Blue Mountain Interchange (#201) or the Willow Hill Interchange (#189) can request a Pennsylvania map from the toll collector to select alternative route. Exiting E-ZPass customers can request a detour card at the fare-collection office located to the right of the Carlisle tollbooth. This closure is necessary to allow salvage crews to safely hoist a double trailer from a ravine next to the Turnpike near the Fort Littleton Interchange (#180). The trailer skidded off the road in a freezing rain early last Friday morning, Feb. 6. Although traffic is typically very light at this time, Turnpike travelers may encounter westbound delays during the closure.
