TRAVEL ADVISORY

Eastbound Turnpike Restricted To a Single Lane Near Donegal

Right lane will reopen shortly after midnight on Wednesday, May 14.

HARRISBURG, PA. (Monday, May 12, 2003) — A single-lane condition on the eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike approaching the Donegal Interchange (#9/91) will remain in effect until the early morning hours of Wednesday May 14, commission officials announced.

The eastbound right lane at milepost 86.5 was initially closed Saturday at 9:30 a.m. when a section of temporary retaining wall buckled. Over the weekend, crews made emergency repairs to the corrugated-steel wall that had been erected as part of reconstruction of the Turnpike between milepost 85-94. Work on Monday and Tuesday will focus on a more long-term stabilization.

Turnpike engineers continue to investigate the cause of the wall failure, though it is believed that saturated sub-base conditions brought on by heavy rains is at least partially to blame.

Motorists planning to travel on the stretch of Turnpike between New Stanton and Donegal should drive cautiously and be alert for stopped or slow-moving traffic, especially during the morning and evening rush.

The Turnpike expects that traffic will be restored to two lanes in the area shortly after midnight on Wednesday May 14.
