TRAFFIC ADVISORY

NIGHTTIME STOPPAGES, TURNPIKE LANE CLOSURES
SCHEDULED NEXT WEEK RELATIVE TO BRIDGE WORK
FOR INTERSTATE 76/INTERSTATE 79 CONNECTOR

Motorists using the Pennsylvania Turnpike in southwestern Butler County may face lane closures and periodic traffic stoppages next week, depending on their time of travel, so that crews can set beams for the bridge that will carry the new Turnpike/Interstate 79 connector road over the Cranberry interchange.

Work necessitating the traffic restrictions will begin at 6 pm Monday, March 17 and will continue on an evening/overnight schedule through Sunday morning, March 23, weather permitting. The evening/overnight work will run from 6 pm to 7 am with one exception. On Friday evening, March 21, work will not begin until 7 pm.

Restrictions will directly affect Turnpike traffic only but could cause delays on U.S. Route 19 in the Cranberry/Marshall area if eastbound entry traffic to the Turnpike is heavy.

Traffic stoppages lasting no more than 15 minutes will occur so that beams can be set into position and secured and to allow crews to perform other tasks over the affected lanes after beam placement. Traffic will be allowed to clear between the stoppages for beam placement and the stoppages for related work over affected lanes.

On March 17-18 and March 18-19, work will require a closure of the right westbound lane on I-76 from 6 pm to 7 am. In addition, there will be periodic stoppages of westbound traffic.

Work on March 19-20 and March 20-21 will require closure of the right eastbound lane and the acceleration lane serving traffic entering at Cranberry to go east, again from 6 pm to 7 am. In addition, there will be periodic stoppages of eastbound traffic.

On March 21-22, work will require closure of the right eastbound lane, the right westbound lane and the eastbound acceleration lane from 7 pm to 7 am. The same restrictions will be in effect from 6 pm Saturday, March 22 until 7 am Saturday, March 23. In addition, all traffic on I-76 will be stopped periodically during the evening/overnight shifts on March 21-22 and March 22-23.

The $45 million Turnpike/I-79 Connector Project is targeted for completion in May 2004.
