TRAVEL ADVISORY
Turnpike Officials Anticipate Heavy Traffic Volumes

At Somerset Interchange for Flight 93 Memorial Service

Memorial service guests should avoid the Somerset
Interchange and use Donegal or Bedford instead.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Monday, Sept. 9, 2002) — Officials at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are encouraging those bound for Somerset, Pa., to avoid using the Turnpike’s Somerset Interchange (#10/110) on Wednesday, Sept. 11 2002.

“Because of the Flight 93 memorial service that will take place at Somerset on Wednesday, we are expecting heavy traffic volumes exiting and entering the Turnpike at the Somerset Interchange,” said Executive Director John T. Durbin. “Therefore, to minimize congestion, we are encouraging motorists headed for the Somerset County crash site via the Pennsylvania Turnpike to exit at Donegal or Bedford as an alternative.”

Motorists approaching Somerset from the east (Harrisburg, Philadelphia, etc.) can exit the Turnpike at the Bedford Interchange (#11/146). Motorists approaching from the west (Pittsburgh, Ohio, etc.) can exit the Turnpike at the Donegal Interchange (#9/91).

The collectors at the tollbooths will have direction cards to guide memorial service guests to the appropriate designated parking area in the region. From there, a shuttle vehicle will transport guests to the crash site and the ceremonies of the day.

“We at the Turnpike want everyone to safely arrive at their destinations – especially during this somber observance,” Durbin said. “We remind all motorists traveling in the area to slow down and drive cautiously.”
