CUSTOMERS CAN GO THE DISTANCE WITH E-ZPASS Harrisburg (PA) Dec. 14, 2001 – Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Executive Director John Durbin today invited E-ZPass customers to “go the distance” as the Turnpike on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, expands its electronic toll collection program statewide across the ticketed system. E-ZPass lanes, beginning at 8 a.m., will be available to passenger vehicles at all 37 exits – from the Delaware River Bridge to the Ohio Turnpike on the east-west mainline and from the Mid-County interchange to the Wyoming Valley Toll Plaza on the Northeastern Extension. “The E-ZPass program is a huge success,” said Durbin. “In just the first year of the program we’ve issued nearly 150,000 tags and congestion has been significantly reduced at many of our busiest interchanges. In fact, during the month of October, we processed more than 2.6 million E-ZPass transactions, marking the first time we surpassed the 2.5 million plus level. Now our passenger vehicle customers will have the added convenience of being able to use E-ZPass statewide across the ticketed system.” E-ZPass is currently available to passenger vehicles only and will be available in Fall 2002 for commercial vehicles. When customers enroll in the Turnpike’s E-ZPass program and establish a prepaid account they will receive an E-ZPass tag, about the size of a deck of cards. Customers mount the tag on the windshield of their car, behind the rearview mirror. Once properly mounted, the tag registers customer entry and exit and charges the appropriate toll, which is electronically transmitted to the Turnpike E-ZPass customer service center where accounts are adjusted. Durbin urged new customers to be patient and alert during the first few weeks of the statewide program as there may be initial confusion surrounding the new E-ZPass system. He encouraged customers to pay close attention to all signs and to the 5-miles per hour speed limit in all E-ZPass lanes. “The safety of our employees and customers is of the utmost importance.” “Increasing enrollment will continue to be a
priority because the more customers enroll the more successful the program
will be,” continued Durbin. “The

tollbooths.” E-ZPass is the convenient way for travelers to pay tolls without stopping and fumbling for change or tickets, and is being used by millions of people who travel up and down the Northeast corridor through Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia. |
