UPDATE - URGENT TRAVEL ADVISORY To permit demolition work on two local overhead bridges, the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be completely shutdown for 4.5 hours between Interchange 10 (Somerset) and Interchange 11 (Bedford) during the early morning of Sunday, Oct. 28. Westbound
motorists will be detoured off the Turnpike at the Bedford Interchange at
1:40 a.m.; eastbound motorists will be detoured off the Turnpike at the
Somerset Interchange at 1:30 a.m. A single lane in each direction will be
restored by 5 a.m.; all four lanes will reopen by 10 a.m. Sunday. (This is a
4.5-hour closure considering the switch to Eastern Standard Time at 2 a.m.
Sunday.) During the shutdown, exiting motorists will receive an alternate-route card — featuring directions to get back onto the Turnpike — from a toll collector. Motorists traveling through the area should use caution and remain alert for sudden stoppages during the shutdown. Although
eastbound access to and from the Somerset south service plaza will be
prohibited during this time, all services will remain in operation for
customers who wish to wait at the plaza. During the closure, crews will implode Pikeview Road Bridge at milepost 120.8 in Stony Creek Township. The blast will occur between 2 and 3 a.m. A 1,000-foot clear zone will be maintained during the blast. This is a weather-sensitive operation and may be postponed in case of lightning or high winds. Also during this closure, Horse Track Road Bridge — a steel girder structure at milepost 117.7 in Stony Creek Township — will be disassembled by crane. The Pikeview Road Bridge is being eliminated altogether; the Horse Track Road Bridge is being replaced by a new structure (to open before Thanksgiving) next to the existing bridge. This work is part of a Turnpike widening and reconstruction project begun in Somerset this summer. |
