TRAFFIC ADVISORY: The reconstruction of a 2.2-mile
section of Turnpike 43 near California, PA is nearing completion and
temporary traffic patterns will change once more before the normal
configuration resumes next week. Restrictions that
have been in effect at the Elco interchange will be lifted by Wednesday
evening with the re-opening of the southbound side of the expressway. Single-lane
patterns on both the northbound and southbound sides will then be in
effect for approximately one week so that crews can remove temporary
crossover lanes built last fall in preparation for the rebuild. The normal
traffic configuration (two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound) will
resume no later than Friday, Aug. 24. The $6 million
project on the oldest part of the growing Mon/Fayette Expressway system,
between Milepost 32.4 and 34.6, was contracted to Norwin Construction of
Irwin, PA. The previous concrete pavement structure was replaced with a
deeper asphalt pavement structure. Northbound lanes were done first. PENNDOT built the 2.2 miles between June 1976 and January 1980 and also constructed the balance of the six-mile James J. Manderino Memorial Highway linking Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 40 in eastern Washington County. The six-mile expressway was opened in October 1990 as part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike system. |
