Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to Expand E-ZPass Program
Beyond Exits 18-33

Launches Enrollment and Public Education Campaign in Northeastern Pennsylvania

WHAT:

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Executive Director John Durbin will announce plans to expand the regional E-ZPass program beyond exits 18-Harrisburg West and 33-LehighValley, will officially launch a regional enrollment and public education campaign, and will distribute E-ZPass brochures and applications to customers at exit 35-Pocono.

WHEN:

Wednesday, March 14, 2001, 10:30 a.m.

WHERE:

Pennsylvania Turnpike exit 35-Pocono. Parking for media and guests is available.

SIGNIFICANCE:
On December 2, 2000, the Pennsylvania Turnpike introduced E-ZPass electronic toll collection at interchanges 18-Harrisburg West through 30-Delaware River Bridge along the east-west mainline, and interchanges 25A-Mid County through 33-Lehigh Valley along the Northeastern Extension for passenger vehicles only.

Since the launch, the success of the program has grown and congestion has been significantly reduced at many of the Turnpike’s busiest interchanges. E-ZPass enrollment has doubled since Dec. 2, with more than 65,000 tags issued by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Customers enrolled in another agency’s E-ZPass program can also use their tag on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, with the exception of commercial vehicles and buses, which are temporarily excluded from the Turnpike’s program.

The Turnpike plans to expand E-ZPass statewide for passenger vehicles by fall 2001. Commercial vehicles and buses will be included in the program in 2002.

Pennsylvania Turnpike customers can enroll in the Turnpike’s E-ZPass program at www.paturnpike.com or by calling 1-877-PENN-PASS. E-ZPass is the convenient way for customers to pay tolls without stopping and fumbling for change or tickets.
