TRAFFIC ADVISORY:
TRAFFIC STOPPAGES SCHEDULED FOR TOTAL REBUILD PROJECT BETWEEN DONEGAL AND SOMERSET INTERCHANGES

Eastbound and westbound traffic on the Interstate 76/I-70 mainline near the Westmoreland-Somerset County border will be stopped intermittently between 1 and 3 pm on two days this week for the blasting phase of a total reconstruction project.

The dates, subject to change due to weather or other unpredictable conditions, are Wednesday, March 22 and Friday, March 24.

Stoppages are to last no longer than 15 minutes. They will occur at points about three miles east of the Donegal Exit (#9), for eastbound traffic, and about eight miles west of the Somerset Exit (#10), for westbound traffic, to allow for the blasting and scaling of rocks on the north side of the highway.

The area includes one of three segments of the 60-year-old, original 160-mile Pennsylvania Turnpike between Irwin and Carlisle that are under total reconstruction. Two of the sites are in Westmoreland County. The other is in Franklin County.

The total reconstruction project for which these traffic stoppages are scheduled is between Milepost 94 and Milepost 99. It began in 1998 and is to be completed before the end of the 2000 construction season.
