Effective Wednesday, Nov. 24, motorists in southeastern Allegheny County will be able to use a new 4,700-foot extension of Piney Fork Road that crosses from South Park Township into Jefferson Hills Borough. The new roadway runs in a northeasterly direction, west of and parallel to the new Mon/Fayette Expressway now under construction in Jefferson Hills. At its northeastern terminus, the new connector road intersects with Gill Hall Road. Because Gill Hall Road will pass under and not be severed by the new expressway, the new connector will restore access to Pa. Route 51 - via Gill Hall Road and Ridge Road - lost August 2, 1999, when Snowden Road was permanently severed to make way for the Mon/Fayette Expressway. Snowden Road parallels Gill Hall Road about one mile to the south but no longer crosses from the west side to the east side of the expressway. Constructed beside the new connector road, also as part of the Turnpike Commission’s Mon/Fayette Expressway Project, was a multi-use trail, 10 feet wide with an asphalt surface, that will serve as part of the Montour Trail. It also will open on November 24. The new Piney Fork Road extension (initially known as the Peters Creek Road extension) and adjacent multi-use trail were constructed as part of Mon/Fayette Expressway Construction Section 52J. New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company of Bedford County is the general contractor for Construction Section 52J at $19.2 million. The primary work in the contract, awarded by the Turnpike Commission last April 6, is the construction of 1.7 miles of the Mon/Fayette Expressway from Stone Church Road in Union Township, Washington County north to Gill Hall Road in Jefferson Hills. |
