CONTRACT AWARDED FOR MON/FAYETTE EXPRESSWAY CONSTRUCTION IN EASTERN WASHINGTON COUNTY The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission today awarded New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company of New Enterprise, Bedford County a $49.2 million contract to construct a 3.1-mile stretch of the Mon/Fayette Expressway in Union Township, Washington County. Construction Section 52H is part of the 17-mile Mon/Fayette Expressway Project that will link Interstate 70 in Fallowfield Township, Washington County with Pa. Route 51 in Jefferson Hills Borough, Allegheny County. It includes construction of an interchange with Finleyville-Elrama Road (S.R.1006 near the village of Gastonville, improvements to Finleyville-Elrama Road and Patterson Road (Union Township Road 992), and construction of a toll collection facility on each of two ramps at the interchange. A combination of culverts and small bridges will be utilized to carry the expressway over Finleyville-Elrama Road, Huston Run, Huston Run Road and Stone Church Road. Eight bids for the contract were opened March 31 at the Turnpike’s Central Office near Harrisburg. New Enterprise Stone and Lime was the apparent low bidder and, after review, was deemed the lowest qualified bidder at $49,202,591. The highest bid was $62.6 million. The deadline for completion of the job is November 16, 2001. This is the fourth Mon/Fayette Expressway section contracted to New Enterprise Stone and Lime, including one farther south in Fayette County that is part of the Pennsylvania section of the Mon/Fayette Expressway’s 12-mile Mason Dixon Link between Uniontown and Interstate 68 near Morgantown, West Virginia. Its four contracts total nearly $124 million. The Pennsylvania leg of the Mason Dixon Link is targeted for completion late this year. The expressway project from I-70 to Route 51 is targeted for completion in late 2001. Today’s award makes New Enterprise Stone and Lime the new leader in terms of the collective value of its Mon/Fayette Expressway construction contracts. Mashuda Corporation of Cranberry Township, Butler County is now second with six contracts totaling more than $97 million. Companies based in southwestern Pennsylvania have won some $335 million of the $362 million worth of Mon/Fayette Expressway construction contracts awarded since October 1994. Prospective alignments for two other Mon/Fayette Expressway projects are under study as the Turnpike Commission continues to compile information for required Environmental Impact Statements. One of those is from Uniontown to the Brownsville area. The other is the Pittsburgh link, which is to extend north from Route 51 in Jefferson Hills to connections with Interstate 376 in the City and near Monroeville. The four component projects, along with small sections of the expressway in the California and Uniontown areas that opened earlier this decade, would stretch about 65 miles south from Pittsburgh through the Monongahela River Valley and western Fayette County to I-68 in Monongalia County, West Virginia.
