THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN
"MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY"
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, in conjunction with PA
CleanWays, will participate in the annual "Make a Difference Day"
Saturday, October 26, 1996.
Volunteers from local cub scout packs, webelos dens,
Jeannette High School, along with individual volunteers, will
plant 500 trees along the Turnpike's Amos K. Hutchinson bypass in
Westmoreland County.
Turnpike Commission Executive Director John Durbin said,
"We're proud to once again take part in this event that has been
so successful in encouraging individuals and families to get
involved and make a difference in their communities." The tree
planting event is held to observe "Make A Difference Day" which
is sponsored by USA Weekend magazine and the Points of Light
organization.
Durbin explained this is the third straight year that the
Turnpike Commission has worked with PA CleanWays to plant trees
along the Amos K. Hutchinson Bypass. Community volunteers
planted 800 trees along the Bypass in 1994 and 350 trees in 1995.
PA CleanWays, a nonprofit organization that fights illegal
dumping and littering, has been the main organizer of the tree
planting effort for the past several years. Jacqueline Bentz,
program director for the National Tree Trust, America's TreeWays
Program, will also participate in the activities.
